Dear Friends and Culinary Enthusiasts!

As we count down to Pastry Live Weekend August 26-28th in Atlanta, this is the first glimpse of what has been happening in previous years to show the evolution of the event.

This week takes us back to 2007 to the first Casting Challenge. We'd been talking with chefs, competitors, executive pastry chefs, and chef instructors for years about evolution in the industry. An instructor and competitor himself, Chef Paul Bodrogi together with Michael Joy, hatched a new kind of pastry competition and many wonderful ideas came to life...

2007 Casting Challenge-Student Competition (Miniseries 1 of 4)
The idea was simple; give seven pastry students the same ten molds and instruct the students to use the molds in as many different ways as possible to create a sugar showpiece and a chocolate amenity. Their skill, creativity and commitment would be the only variables. Together with their assistants they came prepared and went to work.

The camaraderie, innovative techniques and new ideas flowed. In two five-hour sessions the students were judged on their creative use of the molds, kitchen skills, and fulfillment of the competition's theme "Modern Nature." Take a trip back to the beginning, visit Pastry Postcards to share the experience.
